Project-based Learning

To increase engagement and give students an appreciation for real-world applications, the Science department have been trialing project-based learning in several year levels. Last term two year 8 classes had the opportunity to test the strength of different concrete mixtures and build a concrete bridge. In groups of two, students linked the raw materials in concrete to where they are mined and the type of rocks they are made from. After researching, an experimental report was written that compared the strength of three different mixtures of concrete. Carboard molds helped shape the concrete into rectangular blocks and once dried, were tested for strength. The bridge was poured using the strongest mixture in their experiment. Hopefully these projects will continue to expand into other classes over the following months and years.
Two students will be demonstrating their bridges during Innovation Day at Wanneroo SC this Wednesday (15/08/2018)
